    Spelling List:

    • soldiers - person who serves in the military
    • pianos - instrument
    • essays - short writing; literary composition
    • chiefs - head or leader of an organized group of people
    • treaties - a formal agreement for peace
    • countries - a nation
    • skis - snow or water; long, slender runners made of wood, metal, or plastic
    • characters - feature or trait; person or animal in a story
    • badges - emblem, token, mark
    • valleys - less flat land between hills or mountains
    • palaces - official residence of king; large mansion
    • beliefs - something believed; opinion
    • gentlemen - well-mannered man
    • latches - device for holding a door or gate closed
    • envelopes - for a letter
    • loaves - portion of bread or cake

    Reading Vocabulary:

    • afford - to be able to pay for
    • arena - a building used for sports or shows
    • baggage - suitcases, bags, or other items travelers carry; things that get in the way or weigh someone down
    • burrow - to dig a hole or to tunnel into or under something; a tunnel or hole in the ground
    • chamber - a room; usually a bedroom or a room in a palace
    • column - a row of numbers or words running down a printed page; anything arranged in a straight line; a tall, somewhat thin support for a building
    • jagged - with a rough or sharp edge
    • shallow - not deep
    • tour - a trip from place to place, sometimes to perform music or some kind of art; a short trip through a place, usually with a guide; to travel through a place
    • venture - to dare to do, to go somewhere or do something risky; a risk, something you do where you don't know what will happen

    Math Vocabulary

    • length – the measurement of how long something is
    • weight – a measurement that tells how heavy an object is
    • capacity – the amount of liquid a container can hold
    • mass – the amount of matter in an object
    • convert – to change one unit to another
    • customary system – the measurement system most often used in the United States. Units include foot, pound, and quart.
    • foot (ft) – a customary unit for measuring length. Plural is feet. (1 foot=12 inches)
    • yard (yd) – a customary unit of length equal to 3 feet or 36 inches
    • mile (mi) – a customary unit of measure for length (1 mile=5,280 feet)
    • fluid ounce (fl oz) – a customary unit of capacity
    • cup (c) - a customary unit of capacity equal to 8 fluid ounces
    • pint (pt) – a customary unit for measuring capacity (1 pint=2 cups)
    • quart (qt) – a customary unit for measuring capacity (1 quart=4 cups)
    • gallon (gal) – a customary unit for measuring capacity for liquids (1 gallon=4 quarts)
    • ounce (oz) – a customary unit to measure weight or capacity
    • pound (lb) – a customary unit to measure weight or mass (1 pound=16 ounces)
    • ton (T) – a customary unit to measure weight (1 ton=2,000 pounds)
    • metric system (SI) – the decimal system of measurement. Includes units such as meter, gram, and liter

    • centimeter (cm) – a metric unit for measuring length (100 centimeters=1 meter)
